![]() If a picture needs max detail all the way to the edge, I have other lenses to shoot with, like a 60 or 105mm. My wide pictures are about the juxtaposition of light and dark, and typically the main subject is in the middle 2/3rds of the frame. I loved the concept, so why not a similar AF lens for my current Nikon? How is the 20-35 better than the 17-35? Would I like to have a 12-24 or 16-35? Sure! I'm even curious about the 20-35 - my first wide angle zoom was the Sigma 21-35 way back in the 80s. My digital pictures with this lens are as good as they ever were on my various film cameras. It did that splendidly! It now serves as my general purpose ultra-wide on a D850. My 17-35 motor has been serviced by Nikon, so I don't expect it to fail anytime soon (it's whisper quiet now.) I bought the lens to shoot indoor, environmental portraits on ISO 800 and slower film. Unlike modern wide zooms it has an aperture ring, and I still like to go retro with my FA on occasion. I plan to keep the 17-35mm when the motor fails. ![]() I plan to keep the 17-35mm when the motor fails. Obsolete? Yes, but that’s not a synonym for useless. But it’s still capable of producing stunning shots. At f/2.8 and f/4, In 100% crops the design shows its age where edge sharpness matters. I prefer that range to that of the Sigma 14-24mm I also own. And under those conditions, the faults of a lens are more apparent with a higher resolution sensor. They look at 100% crops on computer monitors instead. Of course, in 2019 that’s not how gearheads judge lenses. The difference in the image between a sensor with an 80% MTF and one with a 90% MTF isn’t going to be very noticeable. But let’s say the lens has an MTF of 15% at 40 lp/mm. In practical terms, what this means is if you were to view images at the same size, the print from the higher resolution sensor should look better. If you use the same lens on a sensor with a higher MTF, you get a higher overall MTF. How about some basic theory? For any given image, the MTF at a given frequency is equal to the product of the MTF of each component, including the lens and the sensor. Only on the internet have I ever seen words in support of this. The company was founded by Jeremy Stoppelman and Russell Simmons in July 2004 and is headquartered in San Francisco, CA.Bad lenses do not look better for putting them on higher resolution bodies. ![]() It has a strategic partnership with Grubhub for providing consumers with a service to place food orders for pickup and delivery.
